Mentor Skills to Develop in Any Setting

Communication

Mentors learn how to communicate in any setting. Mentees offer different challenges for mentors, and they have to learn to adjust in order to be a good mentor. This gives them plenty of practice and experience in communicating outside of their comfort zone.

Leadership Skills

As a mentor, leading mentees is one of the most important parts of the job. Mentors quickly learn how to be effective leaders and to adapt their leadership skills to their mentee’s needs. Otherwise, mentees may have trouble learning, which isn’t good for a mentor either. This makes it easier for mentors to lead in different situations and be an all-around better leader.

Networking

Another skill that mentors learn is networking. They network to help their mentees, but they also network amongst themselves. There is a network of mentors that they rely on to help each other grow and be better mentors. Every mentor learns to find ways to collaborate with other mentors and improve their skills for the sake of their mentees.

Join a Group of Mentors and Mentees

Mentors can join a group of other mentors and mentees to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Through EquipHer, mentors are paired with mentees so both can learn from each other.
